Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a Chicago native, has captured the attention of the world with his American upbringing. This interest was reflected in the “Saturday Night Live” Weekend Update segment on May 10, where anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che shared some humorous takes on the new pope.

Jost joked about conservatives criticizing the pope for being too “woke,” questioning how woke a 69-year-old man from Chicago could really be. He playfully imagined the pope introducing himself as “Pope Leo the 14th, he/him,” poking fun at the idea of a modern, progressive pope.

Che joined in on the fun by discussing an AI-generated image of President Donald Trump dressed as a Catholic Church leader. He quipped about the irony of anyone in the Catholic Church enjoying such a juvenile image, eliciting laughter from the audience and leaving Jost momentarily speechless.

The comedic duo also touched on Trump’s proposed 100% tariff on foreign-made movies, causing confusion and anger in Hollywood. Che humorously remarked that the tariffs wouldn’t affect him, as he prefers watching movies on a Florida condo leather couch.

Continuing their Trump-themed banter, Che made a jest about Trump’s plans to reopen Alcatraz, likening the prison’s characteristics to the nicknames Trump allegedly gives his five children. The satirical commentary on Trump’s controversial decisions added to the segment’s comedic flair.

The segment also featured Marcello Hernández as The Movie Guy, discussing recent box office hits like “Sinners” and “A Minecraft Movie.” Hernández teased an upcoming film, “Jurassic World Rebirth,” starring Scarlett Johansson, mispronouncing her name as “Carley Sohanson” for comedic effect.

Jost humorously pointed out that Johansson is his wife, prompting Hernández to claim Rihanna as his own spouse, much to the amusement of the audience. Jost jokingly expressed discomfort at the crowd’s enthusiastic reaction to the playful banter.

The segment concluded with clips from the week’s Weekend Update, offering viewers a glimpse of the comedy and satire that entertained audiences during the show.

Overall, the “Saturday Night Live” Weekend Update segment provided a lighthearted take on current events, showcasing the comedic talents of the anchors and guest performers. The humorous commentary on politics, pop culture, and entertainment added an entertaining twist to the traditional news format, engaging viewers with witty jokes and clever satire.
