And we at UCS are ready to fight back against the onslaught of harmful policies that a second Trump administration would bring. We will continue to advocate for science-based policies that prioritize the health and well-being of farmers, eaters, and the environment. We will work to hold the government accountable and push for transparency and integrity in decision-making.

As we brace ourselves for the challenges ahead, we remain committed to standing up for a food system that is fair, sustainable, and healthy for all. We will work tirelessly to protect the progress that has been made in recent years and to push for even greater advancements in the future.

Stay tuned as we continue to monitor developments and push back against the destructive policies that threaten our food system. Together, we can make a difference and ensure a brighter future for all.

At the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), our focus is on advocating for science-based policies and defending the integrity of scientific research. As we look ahead to President Biden’s administration and the leadership of Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, there are several key areas where we will be pressing for action.

One of our top priorities is to secure and expedite the distribution of funding for the administration’s climate-focused conservation investments and policies. Despite efforts in Congress to claw back conservation funding, the USDA has already allocated a significant portion of the nearly $20 billion from the Inflation Reduction Act. It is crucial that Secretary Vilsack’s USDA moves swiftly to disburse the remaining funds before the transition of administrations on January 20. It is essential to highlight the positive impact of these investments on farmers and the environment and prevent any attempts to undermine them.

Additionally, we will be urging the USDA to fulfill its commitment to end discrimination and promote equity within the agricultural sector. While progress has been made under Secretary Vilsack’s leadership, there is still much work to be done. The recommendations of the USDA Equity Commission provide a roadmap for addressing systemic inequities, and establishing an Office of Small Farms would be a positive step forward before the change in administration.

Defending science and scientists is paramount in the face of potential threats to research and data integrity. The previous administration’s attempts to muzzle USDA scientists and relocate key research agencies have had a detrimental impact on the USDA’s scientific capabilities. As President-elect Trump has shown a disregard for science and federal employees, we must be vigilant in protecting the integrity of scientific research within the USDA and across the government.

Looking ahead to the incoming administration, UCS will be monitoring for signs of corporate capture at the USDA and potential attacks on science-based policies and data. We will be prepared to push back against any attempts to rollback climate and equity initiatives that protect public health and the environment. The coming months may present challenges, but we are committed to advocating for evidence-based policies, defending scientific integrity, and safeguarding our democracy.

As we prepare to engage with the new administration, UCS will continue to mobilize our network of scientists and partners to advocate for sound agricultural and environmental policies. By standing up for science, promoting equity, and defending against attacks on federal science and scientists, we can work towards a sustainable and equitable future for all.
