Chrissy Teigen recently opened up about her struggles with hair loss after giving birth to her first child in 2016. The now mother of four revealed her solution to combat the obvious thinning on Instagram on May 23rd: hairline-lowering surgery. This revelation sparked a conversation about pre- and postpartum hair loss, a common issue affecting around 40% to 50% of mothers, according to the American Pregnancy Association.

Hairline-lowering surgery, also known as forehead reduction, is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at shortening the forehead. Dr. Lesley Rabach, a board-certified facial surgeon, explains that during the procedure, the surgeon advances the hairline towards the brows and removes excess forehead skin. The main goal is to create a more proportionate upper third of the face, as an elongated upper third can throw off facial symmetry.

Dr. David Shafer, a double board-certified plastic surgeon, suggests using the 4-finger method to determine if hairline-lowering surgery is a viable option. If you can fit four fingers between your hairline and the top of your brows, moving the hairline may not be necessary. However, if you can fit five or six fingers, this treatment may be more suitable if it aligns with your desired aesthetic goals.

The benefits of hairline-lowering surgery are primarily cosmetic. The procedure is relatively short and can help balance facial proportions. Dr. Rabach notes that it can also give the eyes a more awake appearance and an overall rejuvenated look. The downsides are minimal for ideal candidates with thick hair. Potential side effects include mild headaches for the first 24 hours post-surgery, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. Patients may also need to wear a light wrap around their head and ice their eyes to reduce swelling and bruising.

In conclusion, hairline-lowering surgery can be a viable option for individuals looking to address postpartum hair loss and achieve a more balanced facial appearance. It is essential to consult with a qualified surgeon to discuss the procedure’s benefits, potential risks, and whether it aligns with your aesthetic goals.
