Luigi Mangione, a 28-year-old accused of killing a healthcare executive on a Manhattan street, admitted to federal stalking charges on Friday.

These charges are linked to the December 2024 shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

In court, Mangione stated, “I knew what I was doing. I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died.”

Thompson’s family attended the court session, watching from the front row as Mangione made his plea. Mangione expressed no remorse and frequently voiced concerns about the U.S. healthcare system.

He confessed to tracking Thompson and traveling to New York after creating a 3-D printed pistol. Prosecutors highlighted the substantial evidence against Mangione, including DNA and fingerprints from the crime scene.

Earlier this year, a federal judge dismissed charges that could have led to the death penalty.

Mangione is still facing murder charges in a state trial scheduled for next month. However, his federal guilty plea may significantly influence the state case. New York’s stringent double jeopardy law could disrupt these proceedings, as it prohibits trying a defendant twice for the same offense.

The defense plans to request the dismissal of state charges, citing the federal guilty plea. If successful, this could reduce Mangione’s prison sentence. State prosecutors argue that their case is different, suggesting double jeopardy does not apply.

This case has attracted worldwide attention and media scrutiny. While political figures have denounced the act as politically motivated violence, Mangione has garnered substantial public support. Many see him as a vigilante challenging an unjust healthcare system. Supporters have contributed over $1.5 million to his legal defense, according to a volunteer-run website.

Thompson, a 50-year-old father of two, was alone in midtown Manhattan, preparing to host an investor conference at a hotel, when he was shot and killed.

Mangione is scheduled to be sentenced on federal charges in December.

This is a developing story.
