The year 2024 marked a significant milestone for Google as the tech giant introduced four flagship phones for the first time. The lineup consisted of the standard Pixel 9, the Pixel 9 Pro, the new Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the rebranded foldable Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Each device catered to different needs and preferences, offering a clear reason to consider each model.

The standard Pixel 9, priced at £799/$799, stood out as the most affordable option among the quartet, making it an attractive choice for budget-conscious consumers. Stepping up to the Pixel 9 Pro provided users with a dedicated 5x telephoto lens and an upgraded selfie camera, all while maintaining the compact 6.3-inch display size. For an additional £100/$100, the top-tier Pixel 9 Pro XL offered a larger 6.8-inch screen, along with a bigger battery and faster charging capabilities. Meanwhile, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold showcased a unique design and a premium price tag, setting it apart from the rest of the lineup.

Fast forward to the upcoming Pixel 10 series, set to debut at Google’s event on August 20th, and a shift in the lineup dynamics is anticipated. While the positions of the Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 10 Pro Fold seem secure, the Pixel 10 Pro’s position is being challenged by the standard Pixel 10. Reports suggest that the Pixel 10 is expected to feature a telephoto lens, a standout feature previously exclusive to the Pixel 9 Pro. Sources indicate that the telephoto lens may house a 10.8Mp sensor, promising enhanced photography capabilities for users.

Recent leaks of a Pixel 10 lineup poster further support the inclusion of three rear lenses across all models, hinting at a substantial camera upgrade for the Pixel 10. While details regarding the optical zoom capabilities remain unknown, the potential improvements could potentially overshadow the 48Mp, 5x sensor found on the Pixel 10 Pro.

To balance the scales, Google may opt to downgrade other camera features on the Pixel 10, such as the main and ultrawide lenses, which have received praise on previous models like the Pixel 9a. With rumors suggesting that prices will mirror those of the Pixel 9 series, the significant price gap between the Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro may make the latter a tough sell for most consumers.

In terms of additional upgrades, the Pixel 10 Pro may offer minor enhancements like faster wireless charging, support for the Thread smart home standard, and Ultrawideband (UWB) for precise location tracking and remote door unlocking. However, core features such as display, chipset, battery capacity, and software are expected to remain consistent across both models.

If the leaked renders are accurate, the Pixel 10’s color options may prove to be more appealing than those of the Pixel 10 Pro. Unless Google unveils unexpected surprises, opting for the Pixel 10 over the Pro variant this year may be a wise choice for consumers looking to save costs without compromising on performance. With a similar feature set and a more attractive price point, the Pixel 10 could be the ideal choice for many tech enthusiasts.
