Renowned photojournalist Ragnar Axelsson has spent 44 years capturing the moments that tell a story. From mundane activities to impending tragedies, Axelsson’s work offers a glimpse into the lives of people and animals, showcasing the connections that exist within communities. His latest project, “Where the World is Melting,” delves into the impacts of a warming planet from Greenland to Siberia.
In this new book, Axelsson’s signature black and white photography captures the stark beauty of snow-covered tundras and misty shorelines undergoing dramatic changes due to climate change. One striking image shows steam rising from the melting Kötlujökull glacier in Iceland, serving as a poignant reminder of the environmental crisis at hand.
“Where the World is Melting” focuses on the stories of aging farmers, sled teams, and Indigenous populations who are grappling with the effects of climate change on their homelands and traditions. Axelsson’s photographs offer a glimpse into the uncertainty faced by reindeer herders in the tundra and other communities as they navigate an uncertain future.
The book is accompanied by an exhibition of Axelsson’s work at the Ernst Leitz Museum in Wetzlar, Germany, running until May 26, 2029. Through his powerful images, Axelsson invites viewers to reflect on the broader reality of our changing world and the urgent need for environmental action.
