White House Talks Between Trump and Zelenskyy Break Down Over Disrespect
White House talks aimed at ending the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv have hit a major roadblock as President Donald Trump accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of disrespecting America, leading to a premature end to the summit.
The tensions between the two leaders escalated even before the formal meeting began, with Trump taking to Truth Social to express his disappointment. He stated, “I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for Peace. He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace.”
During a public exchange in the Oval Office, Trump warned Zelenskyy by saying, “You don’t have the cards right now with us, you start having problems right now. You’re gambling with the lives of millions of people. You’re gambling with world war three.”
Vice President JD Vance also weighed in, questioning Zelenskyy’s approach by asking, “Do you think that it’s respectful to come to the Oval Office of the United States of America and attack the administration that is trying to prevent the destruction of your country?”
Despite Zelenskyy’s efforts to improve ties with Washington and secure a seat at the negotiating table, Trump’s direct talks with Putin have complicated the situation. The leaders were expected to sign a minerals deal during the meeting, establishing a joint US-Ukrainian investment fund to benefit from natural resources owned by Kyiv.
