A 15-year-old white boy has admitted to attempting to drown a black teenager in a Cape Cod pond while hurling racial slurs at him, with a friend mocking the victim as “George Floyd” as he struggled to breathe. John Sheeran, who was 14 at the time of the July 2023 attack, pelted rocks at the 15-year-old victim and coerced him into the pond, where he forcibly submerged the boy’s head under the water while using racial epithets.
Sheeran has pleaded guilty to charges of attempted murder and assault with a dangerous weapon at Barnstable Juvenile Court. There is a possibility that he may be sentenced as an adult, although the specifics of his potential sentence remain unclear. His accomplice, also a white teenager, faces a harassment charge for taunting the victim as he pleaded for his life during the harrowing incident.
The disturbing assault unfolded at a pond in Chatham, Massachusetts, where Sheeran initiated the attack by throwing rocks at the victim and compelling him to enter the water, despite the victim wearing a lifejacket due to his inability to swim. Subsequently, Sheeran swam out to the victim and repeatedly pushed his head underwater while using racial slurs, while his friend callously mocked the victim as “George Floyd,” displaying a complete lack of remorse.
A witness, who is also a minor, corroborated the victim’s account by stating that he heard the victim pleading with Sheeran to cease his aggressive actions due to his inability to swim. The witness observed Sheeran and his accomplice pushing the victim’s head underwater while the victim cried out for help. The witness described the attackers as smirking as they subjected the victim to this traumatic ordeal.
The gravity of the incident is underscored by the racial animus exhibited by Sheeran and his friend, as well as the callousness with which they treated the victim’s pleas for mercy. The case serves as a stark reminder of the persistence of racism and the urgent need for societal efforts to combat such hateful attitudes. Justice must be served for the victim, and those responsible for this abhorrent act must be held accountable for their actions.
