Looking for the Next NZ Breakers Head Coach
The search for the next head coach of the NZ Breakers may lead closer to home, according to Breakers president of basketball operations Dillon Boucher. The club is seeking to replace Petteri Koponen, who left at the end of the recent Australian NBL season to continue his coaching career in Finland.
Over the course of 23 seasons, the Breakers have had nine head coaches, with only two of them being New Zealanders. Despite limited opportunities in the main coaching role, there is a pool of top New Zealand talent in assistant coach positions within the NBL who could potentially step up to the challenge.
Potential Candidates
Judd Flavell, the current Tall Blacks head coach, has extensive experience in the NBL, with 17 seasons in assistant coaching roles. Aaron Young, a former Breakers video co-ordinator turned Perth Wildcats assistant coach, is another promising candidate. Both Flavell and Young have worked closely with local talent and NBL stars throughout their careers.

While there is a push to bring New Zealand talent back to the Breakers, past experiences with local coaches have been short-lived. Former head coaches like Jeff Green and Paul Henare had brief stints with the team, highlighting the challenges faced by local coaches in the NBL.
