Why Dana Carvey, Bill Hader, and Dan Aykroyd Were Missing from the “SNL50: The Anniversary Special”
(Updated with new information from Dan Aykroyd’s reps.)
“Saturday Night Live” legend Dana Carvey has been making frequent appearances on the show this season, portraying President Joe Biden and even bringing back his iconic Church Lady character in December. However, fans were left wondering why he was absent from Sunday’s “SNL50: The Anniversary Special.”
Variety has revealed that Carvey was battling a severe case of the flu and was too unwell to attend the special event. Despite his absence, his close friend and podcast co-host David Spade did participate in the celebration. It is expected that Carvey will share more details about his absence on their podcast “Fly on the Wall With Dana Carvey and David Spade” in the upcoming episode.
As a former regular cast member from 1986 to 1993 and a recurring guest, Carvey’s absence was noticeable, considering his significant contributions to the show. Other notable SNL alumni who were missing from the special included Bill Hader (2005-2013) and original cast member Dan Aykroyd (1975-1979).
Hader’s absence was attributed to a longstanding scheduling conflict, according to his representative. On the other hand, Aykroyd had prior commitments that prevented him from attending. Despite this, the remaining original “Not Ready for Prime Time” cast members, including Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, Jane Curtin, and Chevy Chase, were present in some capacity during the show.
Aykroyd expressed his pride in having been a co-founder of SNL in a social media post on the day of the special, highlighting the historical significance of the event. However, in a previous interview, Aykroyd had mentioned that his participation would depend on how he could best contribute to the show and the overall production.
Additional absentees from the special included “Weekend Update” alumni Colin Quinn and Dennis Miller. Quinn had a stand-up performance scheduled in Raleigh, N.C., on the same night as the SNL special, as per his social media post.
