Patton Oswalt recently made an appearance on The Daily Beast’s “Last Laugh” podcast, where he didn’t hold back in criticizing America’s “authoritarian government” under Donald Trump. One of the most interesting moments of the interview was when Oswalt discussed Trump’s selective targeting of comedy.

Trump has frequently targeted late-night hosts like Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, and Seth Meyers, who often use their platforms to criticize the president. Trump’s dislike for late-night television was believed to be a factor in CBS canceling Colbert’s “The Late Show” earlier this year, as the network’s new owner, David Ellison, has shown support for the president. Additionally, Trump celebrated Kimmel’s suspension from ABC in September. Surprisingly, Trump has not taken aim at “South Park,” a show that has been openly critical of him in a much more explicit and shocking manner than any late-night host.

Oswalt pointed out that Trump’s attacks on late-night hosts are not about ratings but about money. He highlighted the success of “South Park,” which recently signed a new deal and has been receiving record ratings with its anti-Trump episodes. Trump’s respect ultimately lies with numbers and money, and “South Park” excels in both areas.

The comedian emphasized that if Colbert were making the same money and attracting the same viewership as “South Park,” Trump would be at a loss for words. Despite the controversial content of recent “South Park” episodes, the show creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, have doubled down on their anti-Trump stance, stating that politics has become intertwined with pop culture.

While Trump has not directly criticized “South Park,” the White House has denounced the show, claiming it lacks originality and relevance. However, the series continues to air its 28th season, with episodes scheduled through December 10.

In conclusion, Trump’s selective attacks on comedy reflect his focus on money and ratings. “South Park” has managed to navigate this landscape successfully, drawing attention for its bold and controversial content. As politics and pop culture continue to merge, shows like “South Park” play a crucial role in satirizing and critiquing the current political climate.
