Richard Marconi, a molecular biologist at Virginia Commonwealth University, has dedicated his career to studying tick-borne diseases and developing innovative solutions to combat them.

Marconi’s lab houses the world’s largest collection of blood serum from wildlife, with samples infected with various tick-borne pathogens. This collection serves as a testament to the widespread prevalence of tick-borne illnesses in North America. As tick populations continue to expand and their ranges shift due to climate change, the risk of contracting these diseases only grows.

Research revealed that ticks on the island actually preferred shrews to mice, highlighting the complexity of tick ecology.

To address the growing threat of tick-borne diseases, researchers are focusing on developing new vaccines. Lyme disease, caused by the corkscrew-shaped spirochaete bacteria Borreliella burgdorferi, is one of the most widespread tick-borne diseases globally. Early diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics can effectively treat Lyme disease, but challenges in diagnosis and persistent symptoms in some individuals underscore the need for improved prevention strategies.

One promising approach is the development of a new Lyme disease vaccine that targets the OspC protein, which offers broader protection against the various strains of Borreliella burgdorferi. This new vaccine aims to overcome the limitations of previous vaccines, such as the need for frequent boosters. By addressing the complex biology of the bacterium and its ability to evade the host’s immune system, researchers hope to develop a more effective tool for preventing Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. It is essential to check the entire body thoroughly if you suspect exposure to ticks.

    If you do find a tick attached to your skin, it is crucial to remove it carefully. Use tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and gently pull it straight up. Avoid twisting or crushing the tick, as this could cause the mouthparts to break off in the skin, leading to infection. After removing the tick, dispose of it properly and clean the area with an antiseptic to prevent any potential infection.

    In addition to removing ticks from the skin, it is also important to take preventive measures to reduce the risk of tick bites. One way to do this is by washing clothing and animal bedding on hot water. While ticks can survive the washing machine, they cannot withstand water temperatures above 54°C (129°F). By washing items at high temperatures, you can effectively kill any ticks that may be present and reduce the likelihood of bringing them into your home.

    By following these tips and staying vigilant when outdoors, you can minimize the risk of tick bites and the potential transmission of tick-borne diseases. Remember to check for ticks regularly, especially after spending time in wooded or grassy areas, and take prompt action if you find one attached to your skin.
