Super subs in football are often seen as a double-edged sword. While some players may despise being labeled as such, the truth is that they play a crucial role in the success of their teams. Former Premier League manager Harry Redknapp highlights the importance of having quality strikers on the bench, ready to make an impact when called upon.

During his time at Tottenham Hotspur, Redknapp had a wealth of striking talent at his disposal, including Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, Darren Bent, and Robbie Keane. These players were not content to sit on the bench and sulk; they were eager to prove themselves and make a difference when given the opportunity.

One player who has recently excelled in the super sub role is Jhon Duran of Aston Villa. The Colombian forward has scored six goals in nine games this season, with the majority coming off the bench. His ability to come on and change games has been instrumental in Villa’s success.

Substitution coach Sammy Lander emphasizes the importance of understanding the role of substitutes within a team. Villa, under manager Unai Emery, has a clear process for utilizing players like Duran to maximum effect. By targeting specific quiet periods in games and being deliberate with substitutions, Villa has found success with their super subs.

Players like Adam Le Fondre and Pavel Pogrebnyak have also made significant impacts coming off the bench. Le Fondre, now playing for FC United of Manchester, acknowledges the importance of studying opponents and exploiting weaknesses when entering the game as a substitute.

Creating a positive team culture is essential in ensuring that super subs feel valued and motivated. Competition for places can drive players to perform at their best, as seen in Manchester United’s treble-winning squad of 1998-99. Manager Alex Ferguson created an environment where players pushed each other to succeed.

The concept of starters and finishers, popularized by former England rugby coach Eddie Jones, has been adopted in football as well. Players like Jack Grealish and Eberechi Eze have embraced the role of finishers, understanding that their contributions off the bench are just as vital to the team’s success.

While being a super sub may not be every player’s ideal role, it is a necessary and valuable one in football. Players like Jhon Duran may eventually outgrow the role and seek starting opportunities, but for now, they are making a significant impact and proving their worth as key contributors off the bench.
