The wife of a recent Columbia University graduate who was unlawfully arrested by federal agents has issued a desperate public appeal to government officials to release him from detention. Immigration enforcement officers seized Mahmoud Khalil over the weekend and threatened to revoke his green card for his involvement in the anti-war student protests on campus last spring. Khalil’s wife, who wishes to remain anonymous, recounted how agents took her Palestinian activist husband without a judicial warrant as they were walking to their university-owned apartment on Saturday night.

Describing Khalil as her rock, home, and happy place, his wife emphasized his character, selflessness, and commitment to helping others. She highlighted the outpouring of support from those who have crossed paths with him. Currently held at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Louisiana, Khalil’s attorney has filed a petition to halt his deportation and bring him back to New York, where he resides.

President Donald Trump applauded Khalil’s arrest, stating it is the first of many to come. The Trump administration had previously pulled $400 million in grants to Columbia University, citing non-compliance with an executive order aimed at combating antisemitism on campus.

Khalil’s detention has sparked widespread public outrage, with faculty, community leaders, lawmakers, and immigrant rights activists cautioning against the repercussions of revoking someone’s green card status under the guise of fighting antisemitism. Columbia University’s interim President affirmed the institution’s commitment to freedom of speech but emails obtained by Zeteo revealed Khalil’s plea for protection prior to his abduction.

Protests and walkouts in support of Khalil and free speech are scheduled across the country for Tuesday. The unfolding events surrounding Khalil’s arrest underscore the ongoing battle to uphold civil liberties and protect dissenting voices in the face of government crackdowns.
