Winter Weather to Finally Arrive in Metro Denver

Just like a tardy guest to a holiday party, winter is set to make its grand entrance in metro Denver this weekend. Despite officially beginning on Dec. 21, unseasonably warm temperatures have delayed its arrival. But fear not, as winter is finally on its way.

On Saturday, Denver is expected to reach a high near 60 degrees before westerly winds pick up. By evening, a rain and snow mix is forecasted, turning to snow as temperatures plummet. While there is a 70% chance of precipitation, warm ground temperatures will limit accumulation. Evergreen may see 4 to 6 inches of snow, while Boulder could receive up to 3 inches. Most metro areas are expected to see 1-2 inches, with eastern locations possibly only experiencing trace amounts.

After a snowy start on Sunday, skies will clear with a high of 34 degrees, the coldest since November. Temperatures will dip into the mid-teens at night before a warm-up next week, reaching the mid-50s by Wednesday.

While the storm won’t be severe, it may catch some off guard. Shelters in Denver and Jefferson counties are being activated for those in need. Denver Parks and Recreation will open all recreation centers as warming centers on Sunday, along with public library locations.

Heavier snowfall is expected in the Park and Gore ranges, with challenging travel conditions on U.S. 40 and the I-70 corridor. Skiers can rejoice as fresh powder awaits at Winter Park and Eldora Mountain resorts.

Overall, be prepared for winter weather this weekend, especially in the mountains. Stay safe and enjoy the snowy scenery!
