Democratic insiders report that Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley is currently leading the Democratic primary race for Wisconsin governor, surpassing expectations against democratic socialist Francesca Hong in early statewide results.
Supporters of Crowley express surprise at his strong statewide performance, noting that the race remains tight as votes continue to be tallied.
A significant challenge for Hong comes from state Sen. Kelda Roys, whose presence in the race is notably dividing the vote in Dane County, impacting what is typically Hong’s robust support area.
While Hong shows strength in affluent, predominantly white Milwaukee neighborhoods, she struggles to gain traction in many other regions.
In contrast, Crowley, who embarked on a vigorous tour with Gov. Tony Evers to counter Hong’s lead in the polls, is exceeding expectations in key suburban areas outside Milwaukee.
Furthermore, Crowley achieved remarkably high support across Milwaukee’s northside, described by a Democratic Party official, who spoke anonymously, as akin to “Bashar al-Assad numbers.”
