A shocking incident unfolded on the West Side of Chicago when a woman was charged with attempting to kill two police officers while aiding a man in evading arrest. The officers were on patrol in the 200 block of South Cicero on May 21 when they spotted 38-year-old Joseph Howard next to a carjacked minivan, according to a CPD report.

As the officers attempted to apprehend Howard, 24-year-old Keyana Wells drove the minivan in circles around them, urging Howard to jump in. Prosecutors allege that Wells then accelerated the vehicle towards the officers at a high speed, striking one of them while the other managed to escape unharmed. Howard seized the opportunity to jump into the van, and the duo fled the scene.

After a couple of days, law enforcement managed to apprehend both suspects. Wells was charged with two counts of attempted murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, while Howard faces charges of two counts of aggravated battery of peace officers and two counts of resisting arrest. Judge Luciano Panici, Jr. ordered Howard to be placed on around-the-clock electronic monitoring, while Wells was detained pending trial.

This brazen incident highlights the dangers that law enforcement officers face while carrying out their duties to protect and serve the community. It also serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in criminal activity and the repercussions that individuals may face for their actions.

As we continue to strive for a safer and more just society, it is important to support the work of law enforcement officers and ensure that those who endanger their lives are held accountable for their actions. This incident underscores the importance of upholding the law and maintaining public safety in our communities.
