Kali Rynearson, a North Center resident, was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to a tragic incident that took the life of a bicyclist in Lincoln Square. The incident occurred on October 23, 2023, around 8 p.m. when Rynearson ran a red light and struck 59-year-old Donald Heggemann, who was riding his bike northbound in a designated bike lane on North Damen Avenue. The impact of the collision propelled Heggemann into a parked car, resulting in severe injuries that ultimately led to his death.

Witnesses at the scene directed law enforcement officers to Rynearson’s vehicle as she attempted to flee. She was apprehended within minutes, and subsequent tests revealed that her blood alcohol concentration was 0.20, well above the legal limit of 0.08. Additionally, authorities discovered a half-empty bottle of Jim Beam bourbon in her purse, further confirming her intoxication at the time of the incident.

Initially cited and released following the crash, Rynearson faced felony charges after prosecutors reviewed the case. She ultimately pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI causing a fatal accident. Judge Michael Clancy handed down a six-year prison sentence, with 544 days credited for the time Rynearson spent on an ankle monitor during the legal proceedings.

The tragic outcome of this incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol. It highlights the devastating consequences that can result from reckless behavior behind the wheel. The loss of Donald Heggemann’s life is a poignant reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the need to prioritize safety on the roads.
