Foto Féminas: Empowering Latin American Female Photographers
As a passionate researcher, interviewer, and photo editor, I couldn’t help but notice the lack of representation of Latin American female photographers in the online world. This realization, combined with my university thesis and personal interest in photography and the representation of women, sparked the idea of creating Foto Féminas.
In 2014, I took the leap and launched Foto Féminas, a web platform dedicated to showcasing the work of Latin American and Caribbean photographers. Our goal was simple yet powerful: to publish a monthly online feature in both English and Spanish. The inaugural feature in January 2015 highlighted the talented Argentine photographer Lorena Marchetti, whom I had previously interviewed for Ventana Latina.
Since then, Foto Féminas has grown exponentially, with over 100 features to date. We have not only showcased photographers but also organized talks, projections, exhibitions, and maintained a reference library that we have proudly displayed at various photography events.
Despite our successes, we are well aware of the challenges that Latin American female photographers face in today’s competitive industry. It’s essential for these artists to believe in the work they do, seek inspiration from respected professionals, and strive for excellence in every project. By continuing to create, experiment, and present their work, they open themselves up to new opportunities and growth. Investing in oneself, learning from other artists, and recognizing the power of community are all vital steps in overcoming these challenges.
