Over the course of nearly 30 years, collector Jochen Raiß (1969-2022) explored flea markets and antique stores, gathering snapshots. A recurring theme caught his attention: numerous photographs of women posing in trees, captured by unidentified photographers. Swiss publication Züricher Tagesanzeiger questioned, “What are they all doing up there?” Meanwhile, Germany’s Der Spiegel speculated that climbing trees could have been a “forgotten popular sport.” The intrigue surrounding these images is as captivating as the photos themselves.
The book Women in Trees, published by Hatje Cantz in both German and English, is a hardcover edition that follows two previous publications from 2016 and 2017. These editions celebrate the whimsical nature of these images. Copies are available on the publisher’s website.
