A tragic incident unfolded in Downtown Jacksonville, FL, where a former World Trade Center worker, Roger Borkum, fell victim to a brutal attack by three teenagers. The attack, which took place on Oct. 19, resulted in Borkum being severely beaten to the point where he succumbed to his injuries four days later.

Borkum, a 64-year-old Long Island native who was homeless at the time, was found with blood surrounding his head and a blood trail on the sidewalk. The assailants, identified as Justin Curry, 13, Marcavion Lacey, 19, and Robert Pope, 17, were seen rummaging through Borkum’s backpack before returning to kick him multiple times.

The attackers were swiftly apprehended by authorities and indicted for murder on Nov. 20. Shockingly, one of the suspects, Justin Curry, was only 12 years old at the time of the attack. The motive behind the assault was attributed to Borkum allegedly disrespecting the teenagers’ deceased acquaintances, although specifics were not provided.

Roger Borkum’s life story adds layers of tragedy to this already horrific incident. Having worked as a consultant on the 77th floor of Tower 1 at the World Trade Center, Borkum narrowly escaped the infamous 9/11 attacks after being let go from his job just months prior. This twist of fate spared him from the tragic events that unfolded on that fateful day in September 2001.

Furthermore, Borkum’s personal life was marked by further tragedy when his wife, Celeste Borkum, lost her life during a humanitarian mission in Africa in 2009. The series of unfortunate events that befell Roger Borkum paint a picture of a man who faced hardships and heartbreak throughout his life.

The senseless act of violence that ultimately claimed Roger Borkum’s life serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of human existence and the randomness of tragedy. As the perpetrators face legal consequences for their actions, the memory of Roger Borkum and the challenges he endured throughout his life will serve as a somber reminder of the harsh realities of the world we live in. May he rest in peace.
