WWE star makes a huge return in SmackDown main event between Cody Rhodes & Gunther

The main event on SmackDown delivered a match worthy of a Premium Live Event, as Cody Rhodes took on Gunther in an intense grudge match. A notable WWE star made a significant return during the event.

As Gunther entered the arena for the main event, Cody Rhodes launched a surprise attack on him, seeking revenge. During the match, CM Punk appeared to monitor The Ring General. Punk had earlier voiced his displeasure with Adam Pearce’s announcement that a win by Gunther and Sami Zayn would earn them a spot in the WWE title match at SummerSlam 2026. Punk was also unhappy with Cody for engaging in a match just a day before their crucial headliner at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

With just under four minutes left before the show ended, Sami Zayn made a return and attacked Punk in a retaliatory move. The situation escalated into a disqualification finish, and SmackDown concluded with Gunther and Sami Zayn in a brawl against CM Punk and Cody Rhodes.

Despite their history, Gunther and Sami Zayn have joined forces, driven by the shared goal of entering the WWE title race at SummerSlam. Notably, Sami Zayn had ended Gunther’s record-breaking reign as Intercontinental Champion a few years back. Though Zayn is not a villain, he harbored resentment towards CM Punk for dethroning him, believing it was unjust to defend his WWE Championship on a show he wasn’t part of. The unfolding events were chaotic, providing the explosive conclusion that SmackDown needed, as the rest of the show lacked significant highlights.
