If you’re looking for a comprehensive guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world, look no further than the White House Watch newsletter. This newsletter is your go-to source for all things related to the upcoming election, providing you with insightful analysis and expert commentary on the latest developments in US politics.

In a recent meeting between China’s President Xi Jinping and Vietnam’s Communist party chief To Lam, Xi took a thinly veiled swipe at Donald Trump’s trade policies, urging Vietnam to join forces with Beijing to oppose “unilateral bullying”. This comes as Trump has imposed high tariffs on both China and Vietnam, two of the US’s largest trading partners.

During his visit to south-east Asia, Xi emphasized the importance of maintaining strong trade ties and upholding the global free trade system. He reassured Vietnam that China’s market is always open to them and expressed support for Vietnam’s socialist path.

Despite facing significant tariffs from the US, China and Vietnam have signed several cooperation agreements during Xi’s visit, including one on railway development. This highlights the strong relationship between the two countries and their commitment to working together to navigate the challenges posed by Trump’s trade policies.

Trump, on the other hand, has been vocal in his criticism of China and Vietnam, accusing them of trying to undermine the United States. He has made it clear that he expects foreign leaders to bow to his demands and offer favorable trade deals to the US.

As tensions continue to escalate between the US and its trading partners, countries in south-east Asia are caught in the crossfire. Vietnam, in particular, has been making efforts to appease Washington while also maintaining its relationship with Beijing. Critics warn that Trump’s aggressive tactics could backfire and push these nations closer to China.

Xi’s visit to Vietnam, Malaysia, and Cambodia underscores China’s efforts to strengthen ties with its neighbors and solidify its position as a key player in the region. As the trade war between the US and China rages on, it’s becoming increasingly clear that there are no winners in this battle, and countries must work together to uphold the principles of free trade.
