Xiaomi, a Chinese tech giant known for its smartphones, has recently entered the electric vehicle market with the launch of its first electric car. Now, the company is gearing up to take on Tesla’s best-selling car in China with the unveiling of its new electric SUV, the YU7.
The YU7 was revealed in Beijing on May 22, 2025, with a full launch scheduled for July. Xiaomi claims that the YU7 will have a driving range of at least 760 kilometers (472 miles) on a single charge, surpassing Tesla’s Model Y, which advertises a range of 719 km. This extended driving range is a key selling point for consumers concerned about the frequency of battery charging.
Analysts predict that the YU7 could pose a significant challenge to Tesla’s dominance in the Chinese market. Citi analyst Jeff Chung expects the YU7 to erode Tesla Model Y’s market share, projecting monthly sales of around 30,000 units and annual sales reaching 300,000 to 360,000 units. The YU7 is expected to be priced between 250,000 yuan to 320,000 yuan ($34,700 to $44,420), directly competing with Tesla’s Model Y, which starts at 263,500 yuan in China.
Last year, Xiaomi introduced its first electric car, the SU7 sedan, priced lower than Tesla’s Model 3 at the time. Despite facing challenges such as a fatal crash involving an SU7 vehicle, Xiaomi managed to deliver over 28,000 units of the SU7 in April. The company aims to position the YU7 as a luxury SUV and expects it to outperform the SU7 in terms of sales.
In addition to Xiaomi’s foray into the electric vehicle market, rival company Xpeng is set to release the Max version of its Mona M03 car, featuring advanced driver-assist capabilities. With the competition heating up in the electric vehicle space, consumers can expect more innovative offerings from companies like Xiaomi and Xpeng in the near future.
Overall, Xiaomi’s entry into the electric vehicle market with the YU7 SUV signals its ambition to compete with industry leaders like Tesla in China. With a focus on driving range, pricing, and performance, Xiaomi is poised to make a significant impact on the rapidly evolving electric vehicle landscape. Stay tuned for the official launch of the YU7 in July to see how it stacks up against the competition.
