Yadira Caraveo Announces Candidacy for 8th Congressional District Race in 2026
After just over 100 days since leaving Congress, Yadira Caraveo is ready to make her return to Washington, D.C. The Thornton Democrat is set to announce her candidacy for the 8th Congressional District race in 2026, seeking to reclaim the seat she held for the district’s first two years.
In a recent interview with JS, Caraveo expressed her readiness for a tough race, emphasizing her commitment to a moderate and middle-of-the-road approach that aligns with the desires of the district’s constituents. She acknowledged the competitive nature of the district and the narrow margin of her loss to Republican U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans in the previous election.
Caraveo, a 44-year-old pediatrician and daughter of Mexican immigrants, is focusing on the potential cuts to Medicaid under President Donald Trump’s proposed budget. With a significant portion of her former patients relying on the program, she is critical of Evans’ apparent lack of concern for the impact on families.
Before facing Evans in the general election, Caraveo will have to contend with fellow Democrat state Rep. Manny Rutinel in the primary election. Rutinel, who has already raised over $1 million for his campaign, poses a formidable challenge in the race.
The 8th District, known for its high concentration of Latinos, presents a diverse set of issues including immigration. Caraveo’s stance on immigration has evolved over time, with a focus on comprehensive reform rather than fear-mongering and mass deportations.
Having faced personal challenges, including struggles with mental health, Caraveo emphasizes the importance of seeking help and overcoming obstacles. She has been open about her experiences to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
With the 8th District being the most politically competitive in Colorado, the upcoming race is expected to be closely watched. The Cook Political Report and the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia both classify the race as a toss-up, highlighting its significance in the 2026 midterm elections.
