The next chapter in the Yellowstone saga will feature a spinoff centered on Luke Grimes‘ character, Kayce Dutton.
Since its debut in 2018, Yellowstone has captivated audiences with the story of the fictional Dutton family, owners of Montana’s largest ranch. Following its success on Paramount, creator Taylor Sheridan expanded the Yellowstone universe with the prequels 1883 and 1923.
Now, CBS has greenlit Y: Marshals, an upcoming series that will follow Kayce as he departs from the Yellowstone ranch to join the U.S. Marshals, set to premiere after Yellowstone wraps up in December 2024.
Grimes shared his excitement on Instagram, noting, “Cowboys don’t say goodbye, they say see you later.”

When Is the Premiere of ‘Y: Marshals’ on CBS?

The much-anticipated show is slated to debut in spring 2026 on CBS, filling the midseason slot on Sunday evenings at 9 p.m. ET.
Spencer Hudnut, known for his work on SEAL Team, will serve as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the series. Taylor Sheridan will also take on an executive producer role, while CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach mentioned, “In terms of Taylor’s involvement, we’re still early in the process. He’s quite busy, but we’ll take what we can get.”
What Is the Theme of the Spinoff?
According to the official description, Y: Marshals chronicles Kayce’s transition as he leaves behind “ranch life to join an elite unit” of U.S. Marshals. He will utilize his experiences as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to establish justice in Montana, where he and his fellow Marshals must juggle family responsibilities, duty, and the profound psychological impacts associated with being the last line of defense in the ongoing battle against regional violence.
Who’s in the Cast?
Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, Tatanka Means, Brett Cullen, and Logan Marshall Green will be joining Grimes in this new series.
Kebbel, Santos, and Means will portray Belle, Andrea, and Miles, respectively, as members of the U.S. Marshals, while Cullen takes on the role of Harry Gifford, the chief of the U.S. Marshals in Montana.
Will Any ‘Yellowstone’ Stars Appear in ‘Y: Marshals’?

Gil Birmingham will reprise his role as Thomas Rainwater, along with Mo Brings Plenty returning as Mo, and Brecken Merrill as Kayce’s son, Tate Dutton.
Kelly Reilly is also set to star in her own spinoff alongside Cole Hauser, which is currently under development. However, Kevin Costner may not return—if at all—after the demise of the family patriarch in this final season of Yellowstone. There has yet to be any confirmation regarding Wes Bentley‘s presence as Jamie Dutton.
Will Monica Appear in Kayce’s ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff?
A notable absence so far is that of Kelsey Asbille, who portrayed Kayce’s wife, Monica Dutton, in Yellowstone. Her name has not yet been included in the cast announcements for Y: Marshals.
A sneak peek of the series reveals Kayce declaring, “I’m changing paths. Trying to find a new beginning.”
