A visit to a well-known park in Bucktown turned terrifying when a man grabbed an 8-year-old boy and attempted to abduct him, according to prosecutors.
Elijah Peaches, 28, faces charges of attempted child kidnapping and unlawful restraint related to the April 28 incident at Walsh Park, located at 1722 North Ashland Avenue, near the Bloomingdale Trail’s eastern end.
Prosecutors stated that the child’s mother had briefly stepped away while her son was playing. During this short absence, Peaches allegedly approached, lifted the boy, and started to leave the area.
A bystander reportedly heard Peaches say to the boy, “You’re going to learn today,” as he carried him several feet from his original location.
A 50-year-old woman, witnessing the incident, intervened and managed to pull the boy away from Peaches after a brief altercation, officials reported.
Other witnesses contacted 911 and pursued Peaches as he exited the park, prosecutors said. They alerted officers at Marshfield Avenue and Wabansia Avenue, where police apprehended Peaches.
Judge John Hock ordered Peaches to be held in custody until his trial, describing the act as a random and opportunistic attempt to abduct a child from his family.
