Following Mamdani’s historic win, all eyes were on Duwaji as she graced the stage in a chic ensemble designed by London-based Palestinian artist Zeid Hijazi. Hijazi, a Central Saint Martins graduate and winner of the Fashion Trust Arabia Prize, has been inundated with requests and messages since Duwaji’s public appearance in his creation.

In a recent interview with British Vogue, Hijazi shared his thoughts on dressing the new first lady and the significance of being a Palestinian designer in the fashion industry.

Reflecting on seeing Duwaji wear his design, Hijazi expressed his initial disbelief and overwhelming sense of pride. He admitted, “You never know if it’s actually going to happen, so I didn’t let myself get too hyped. Then I woke up the next morning in Jordan, opened Instagram, and it was crazy.”

He went on to explain the profound impact of having a political figure like Duwaji wear his creation, emphasizing that the moment transcended personal success and became a symbol of community pride.
