Zilch, a British financial technology firm, recently achieved a significant milestone by reporting its first-ever month of profit. This achievement comes as the company gears up for a potential initial public offering in the future. In a trading update, Zilch revealed that it reached operating profitability in July 2024, just four years after its inception. This rapid success in reaching profitability sets Zilch apart from other major consumer fintech companies, such as Starling and Monzo, which took longer to achieve profitability.

Competing in the buy now, pay later space alongside industry giants like Klarna and Block, Zilch has managed to surpass £100 million ($130 million) in annual revenue run rate, doubling its run rate from the previous year. Philip Belamant, Zilch’s CEO and co-founder, attributed this achievement to the company’s focus on growth rather than cost-cutting measures, unlike many other fintech companies in the current high-interest rate environment.

Belamant emphasized Zilch’s unique approach to reaching profitability, stating, “We looked at this and said let’s grow our way to profitability.” This strategy has allowed Zilch to differentiate itself in a competitive market and position itself for future success.

In addition to its financial accomplishments, Zilch also announced the appointment of Mark Wilson, former CEO of Aviva, to its board as a non-executive director. Wilson expressed his excitement about joining Zilch during a critical phase of the company’s growth and affirmed his commitment to supporting Zilch in becoming a category leader in the fintech industry.

Looking ahead, Zilch has ambitious plans for expansion and potential public listing within the next 12 to 24 months. The company recently secured $125 million in initial debt financing from Deutsche Bank, with the option to access up to $315 million in credit from various banks. This financial boost is expected to fuel Zilch’s growth and significantly increase its sales volumes in the coming years.

As Zilch continues to thrive and expand its market presence, it faces competition from Klarna, another major player in the U.K. buy now, pay later sector. Klarna’s CEO, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, has hinted at a possible stock market flotation in the near future, adding to the dynamic landscape of fintech companies vying for market dominance.

With its impressive financial performance and strategic growth initiatives, Zilch is poised to solidify its position as a leading player in the fintech industry and attract investors’ attention as it moves towards a potential IPO.
