A 53-year-old man from Chicago has received a 12-year prison sentence after prosecutors described his brutal beating of an amputee over a $600 drug debt amid a home invasion in Edgewater; however, he will not serve time behind bars.
Ronald Armour was released on October 3 after counting the three-plus years he spent in Cook County Jail before the trial, alongside a standard 50 percent sentence reduction for good behavior, according to court and prison records.
Initially charged with murder following the attack in July 2021 at an apartment in the 6000 block of North Kenmore Avenue, Armour pleaded guilty to a Class X felony of causing bodily injury during the home invasion. Judge James Novy handed him a 12-year sentence.
Known as “Ziploc” in the drug scene, Armour forcibly entered the victims’ apartment around 11:40 a.m. on July 1, 2021, after his knocks were ignored. He confronted two men, ages 63 and 53, and attacked them by punching both in the face and head.
One victim managed to escape but sustained multiple facial injuries. The other, identified as Darren Williams, was unable to flee due to his amputation. The coroner ruled his death a homicide, attributing his primary cause of death to heart disease, while blunt force trauma and cocaine were contributing factors.
Before the assault, the victims had a long-standing relationship with Armour, repeatedly purchasing cocaine and owing him a $600 debt, which they had texted him about repaying. After the incident, the surviving victim reported “Ziploc” to the police, even sharing Armour’s number.
In a troubling turn, while the victim was in the hospital, Armour allegedly reached out again, texting him about being at the apartment building and questioning the police presence, even demanding debt repayment.
Armour’s criminal history features various felony convictions involving drugs, fleeing authorities, and DUI, making this his first violent crime conviction.
