NYC Sees Record Low Gun Violence in 2025, Mayor Adams Snubbed
New York City kicked off the new year with a remarkable achievement – the lowest levels of gun violence in the city’s history. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and Mayor Zohran Mamdani proudly announced this milestone on Tuesday. However, there was a noticeable absence of recognition for former Mayor Eric Adams, who oversaw the significant decrease in shootings and shooting victims.
“I want to be clear, these are not incremental gains,” Tisch emphasized regarding the new NYPD data. “They are historic outcomes.”
Shootings in the city last year surpassed the previous record set in 2018 by 10%, with a total of 688 incidents, as per the data.
Police officials highlighted that the total number of shootings in 2025 was lower than both Chicago (1,400 shootings) and Philadelphia (825 shootings) – cities with significantly smaller populations compared to New York.
The number of shooting victims also decreased by 5% to 856, below the record set in 2018, according to the data.
Compared to the previous year, there were 247 fewer shooting victims in 2025, representing a 22% decrease, the data reveals.
December 2025 marked the month with the fewest shootings on record since the NYPD started tracking crime statistics, along with the lowest number of shooting victims, officials reported.
“Those historic reductions in shooting incidents and victims weren’t confined to a single part of the city – they were reflected across all five boroughs,” Tisch added.
Tisch also noted a decline in transit crime, making 2025 the safest year in the subway system in 16 years, excluding the COVID pandemic.
The crime numbers of 2025 continued a trend of decreasing citywide crime after a concerning spike during the COVID pandemic.
The decline in crime served as a positive note for the final year of Adams’ tenure as mayor, which was marred by scandals.
