Democratic Candidate Zohran Mamdani Sets Record in NYC Mayoral Primary

In a historic turn of events, Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani has achieved a significant milestone by securing the highest number of votes ever recorded in a New York City mayoral primary election. According to the latest figures released by the city’s Board of Elections on Tuesday, Mamdani garnered an impressive 565,639 votes in the third round of the Democratic Party’s ranked-choice voting primary last year. This feat was further bolstered by the transfer of 102,000 votes from other candidates.

Expressing his elation over this remarkable achievement, the state Assemblyman from Queens proudly announced on social media, “With the updated RCV totals just released by the Board of Elections, our campaign has officially earned the most total votes in a primary in New York City History.”

The previous record for the highest number of votes in a Democratic mayoral primary was set in 1989 when David Dinkins surpassed Ed Koch with 547,000 votes in a non-ranked-choice election.

Comparatively, in the 2021 democratic mayoral primary, Eric Adams secured just over 404,000 votes in the final round of ranked choice, with approximately 50,000 votes being transferred to him.

As the counting of ballots continues, Mamdani’s total votes are anticipated to increase further.

Despite several attempts to reach out for a comment, a representative from Mamdani’s campaign has not responded so far.
