A high school graduation event in Northern California turned tragic on Wednesday night when shots were fired outside the venue, resulting in one death and three injuries. Authorities are still searching for the shooter.
The incident occurred shortly after the Sem Yeto High School commencement ceremony at Fairfield High School’s Schafer Stadium.
Officials confirmed an active shooter situation at the stadium, and the investigation is ongoing.
According to school district representatives, the violence erupted after the graduation ceremony had ended.
At approximately 8 p.m., Suisun City Mayor Alma Hernandez took to social media to announce that three individuals had been shot.
Mayor Hernandez also mentioned that there was an active shooter situation at the stadium and the investigation was ongoing.
“It’s traumatic for everyone who witnessed it. It’s outrageous,” said Fairfield Police officer Michelle Belyea.
“It’s sad. Prayers for everyone affected by it. I’m so sorry you had to go through that.”
The Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District confirmed that law enforcement responded to the campus after the incident.
“Law enforcement is on campus, and as this is an active investigation we have no additional information to share at this time,” a district spokesperson said. “Our thoughts are with the individuals affected and as soon as we have more details we will share that with you.”
Footage from a livestream reviewed by KCRA 3 showed the graduation ceremony itself, but did not capture any gunfire during the event.
One attendee mentioned that the shooting occurred in the parking lot after the ceremony ended, while families and graduates gathered for photos.
An additional witness, a father whose daughter was attending to support a graduating friend, reported hearing gunshots and immediately fleeing.
Later that night, Mayor Hernandez posted on social media that an active shooting chase was taking place in Fairfield, although she did not provide further details.
As the investigation continues, police have not released additional information.
