16-Year-Old Charged in Woodlawn Carjacking Attempt Turned Shootout
A 16-year-old boy has been charged in connection with a violent carjacking attempt that took place in Woodlawn back in September. The incident culminated in a shootout, resulting in injuries to both a 34-year-old woman and one of the alleged perpetrators, as reported by the police.
The harrowing event unfolded at approximately 10 a.m. on September 7 in the west alley of the 6700 block of South Creiger Avenue. According to Chicago police, the woman, who possessed a valid firearms license, was seated in her green Dodge Challenger when a group of individuals arrived in another vehicle, brandishing weapons, and attempting to steal her car.
In a bold move, the woman retrieved her own firearm and engaged in a gun battle with at least one of the assailants, ultimately hitting a 16-year-old boy in the chest and groin, as per a CPD report. During the exchange of gunfire, the woman sustained a gunshot wound to her leg.
Forensic analysis revealed the presence of over a dozen shell casings at the scene, with bullets penetrating the windows of a nearby building, underscoring the intensity of the confrontation.
After the altercation, the woman allegedly informed investigators that she recognized one of the would-be carjackers as a local rapper. While online sources widely linked the 16-year-old who was shot to that rapper, law enforcement has not officially confirmed whether the teen facing charges this week is indeed the same individual.
The teenage suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed due to his juvenile status, is now facing charges of attempted second-degree murder, attempted vehicular hijacking, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the incident.
