Chicago police released these surveillance images of three people suspected of participating in a robbery spree aboard the Red Line in September (Chicago Police Department)

16-Year-Old Charged with Robbing CTA Riders

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with committing four robberies on CTA trains and platforms earlier this year, according to Chicago police. The boy was arrested in the 1100 block of South Hamilton, near the county’s juvenile justice center, indicating potential pending legal matters.

Police reported that the boy’s first robbery occurred at the Cermak-Chinatown stop around 5 a.m. on July 31, where he targeted a 24-year-old man.

In late September, the boy was part of a group involved in a series of robberies from the North Side to downtown. A 14-year-old boy was also charged in connection with the spree within a week.

The group’s criminal activities began near Bryn Mawr around 10:50 p.m. on September 17, where they attacked a 30-year-old man on a train. The victim was assaulted by several individuals wearing hoodies, who stole his phone, glasses, and AirPod case. A 26-year-old man was also charged last month in connection with this robbery.

Shortly after the first incident, a 34-year-old man was mugged by a group of five to seven individuals between Wilson and Sheridan. The victim’s phone, bank cards, and other belongings were stolen, although he declined medical attention.

The 16-year-old suspect is facing charges including three counts of robbery, three counts of aggravated battery of a transit passenger, and one count of armed robbery with a firearm. Due to his age, no further details about the boy have been disclosed.
