Two Women Attack and Rob 88-Year-Old Uptown Resident

Reports suggest that two women attacked and robbed an 88-year-old Uptown resident as she made her way home from the grocery store. Prosecutors claim that one of the women also attempted to rob an Uber Eats driver less than an hour before the incident.

The ordeal began around 2 p.m. on January 21 when Martinique Holloway, 40, entered a restaurant in the 4500 block of North Sheridan Road where a 63-year-old Uber Eats driver was waiting for an order.

Allegedly, Holloway began smoking inside the restaurant and asked the cashier for $5, claiming she was pregnant. When her request was denied, she turned to the Uber driver with the same plea. Ignored by the driver, Holloway allegedly snatched the phone from the driver’s hand and attempted to flee.

During the struggle to retrieve her phone, Holloway reportedly struck the driver multiple times in the head and face. Despite this, the driver managed to recover her phone before Holloway ran off.

About 40 minutes later, at 2:40 p.m., the 88-year-old victim was walking home from Aldi with groceries when she encountered Holloway and 34-year-old Nemieka Horton outside Sonic on West Wilson Avenue, according to prosecutors.

One of the women tripped the elderly victim, causing her to fall into nearby bushes. While she was on the ground, one assailant held her down while the other attempted to grab her purse, which was wrapped around her shoulder.

The victim initially believed she was being assisted to stand up, only to realize that she was being held down. One of the attackers started punching her in the face and kicking her in the side, forcefully pulling the purse until the strap broke. The two women then walked away, leaving the 88-year-old on the ground.

Despite her injuries, the victim managed to pull herself up and follow the attackers from a distance. She was able to recover a bank envelope that had been in her purse, although it was empty. Her wallet was missing from the purse, which she found in the street. A passerby helped her contact the police.

After being treated at a hospital for severe bruising and injuries, the victim remains deeply affected by the attack and feels ashamed, according to prosecutors.

Both Horton and Holloway were spotted by officers on patrol last Thursday afternoon and were recognized from an internal bulletin distributed by detectives handling the case. They are both charged with robbery and aggravated battery of a victim over 60 years old in connection to the attack on the 88-year-old victim. Holloway faces an additional robbery charge related to the incident with the Uber Eats driver.

While Judge James Costello detained Holloway pending trial, Horton was released with orders to stay away from the 88-year-old victim.

It is worth noting that Holloway has a significant criminal record, including past convictions for attempted carjacking, narcotics, aggravated battery, robbery, and criminal damage to property.
