A recent recall has been announced for a batch of Steinlager beer due to incorrect alcohol-free labels.

Lion is recalling over 2500 cases of Steinlager Ultra Low Carb 24-packs as clear bottles with alcohol-free labels were found to contain alcohol. The company clarified that Steinlager Alcohol Free is only sold in green bottles, not clear ones.

Following a customer complaint, it was discovered that an error in the production run led to beer containing 4.2 percent alcohol being incorrectly labeled. The affected 24-packs may contain a mix of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beers, totaling 2538 cases with a best-before date of 21 October 2026.

Lion has issued an apology for the mistake and assured a comprehensive investigation to prevent such errors in the future. They are actively working with retailers to recall the product from stores, advising individuals who should not consume alcohol to avoid the product. Those concerned about their health after consuming the product are urged to consult a healthcare professional.

New Zealand Food Safety chief executive, Vincent Arbuckle, acknowledged the potential worry this recall may cause for consumers with specific dietary or lifestyle preferences. NZFS will collaborate with Lion NZ to understand the cause of the error and implement measures to prevent its recurrence.
