Man Found Shot to Death on Front Porch in Roseland

A tragic incident unfolded in Roseland early Friday morning as a man was discovered shot to death on a front porch. Chicago police responded to a 911 call reporting a man lying on the porch in the 200 block of West 108th Street. The victim, a 29-year-old male, had sustained a gunshot wound to the left flank and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigations revealed that the man had been outside when a red truck approached and an occupant of the vehicle opened fire around 4:29 a.m. The victim then sought refuge on the porch where he tragically succumbed to his injuries. The lack of immediate gunfire reports in the area highlights the absence of the city’s ShotSpotter network, which was deactivated over a year ago.

Impact of Disconnected ShotSpotter System

Following Mayor Brandon Johnson’s decision to disconnect Chicago’s ShotSpotter system in 2024, concerns have been raised about the repercussions of this move. The system, which accurately detected and pinpointed gunfire locations in high-crime areas, played a crucial role in timely responses to shooting incidents.

Statistics from HeyJackass.com reveal that areas formerly covered by ShotSpotter experienced a significant increase in fatality rates among shooting victims due to delayed emergency responses. Despite calls from various quarters to reinstate the system, Mayor Johnson remained steadfast in his decision.

As the city grapples with the aftermath of this decision, cases like the recent shooting in Roseland underscore the importance of effective gunshot detection technology in combating violent crime.

Editor’s note: Case #13 was removed from this list on May 21, 2025, after further investigation by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
