Earlier tonight, Chris Jericho made an unexpected comeback to AEW on Dynamite. After being absent for nearly a year, he appears ready for another significant chapter with the company.
During his time away, there were rumors of Jericho returning to WWE, as his contract was reportedly ending in 2025. However, it was clarified earlier this year that he remained under contract with AEW, with his agreement frozen during his hiatus. Despite this, his wrestling future remained uncertain.
This evening, Jericho appeared at AEW Dynamite in Winnipeg, his hometown, assuring fans that he was still part of the All-Elite family. This could mark the beginning of another exciting run for him, and there are several potential reasons for his decision to return.
Chris Jericho could have a proper retirement run
Now in his mid-50s, Jericho’s in-ring performance may not be what it once was, yet he still has the potential for another stint in wrestling. Contemplating retirement, he might be considering AEW’s successful retirement tours, as seen with Sting and Bryan Danielson.
This comeback might signify the start of his career’s final phase, offering him significant freedom. Tony Khan could arrange matches with opponents Jericho wishes to face before retiring, similar to Danielson’s send-off.
More flexible setup
Recently, Jericho has been juggling numerous commitments outside the ring. His band, Fozzy, and another band, Kuarantine, keep him busy touring, along with appearances at wrestling and horror conventions and roles in various productions.
Back in February, Fightful Select reported that Jericho’s return to WWE would require him to abandon his outside projects. AEW provides a more flexible arrangement, allowing him to manage both his TV appearances and external ventures.
Promised a bigger role within AEW
Previously in AEW, Jericho embraced his Learning Tree persona, sharing his vast experience with other wrestlers in an exaggerated manner.
As he approaches the latter part of his career, Jericho could focus on nurturing the next generation of stars. Alongside competing, he might assume a more significant backstage role, such as a producer or coach, similar to Dustin Rhodes’ position during his injury recovery.
Currently, what lies ahead for Chris Jericho remains uncertain, as his appearance tonight was brief and he said little to the audience. Nonetheless, his return to AEW could signify the onset of another substantial run with the promotion.
