Shoplifter Opens Fire at Jewel-Osco, Wounding Three
Three individuals were injured in a shooting incident on Tuesday morning at a Jewel-Osco store in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago. According to Chicago police, the incident occurred when a shoplifter fired shots at a security guard inside the store.
Police were called to the grocery store located at 443 East 34th Street at approximately 10:52 a.m. The authorities reported that two men entered the store, attempted to steal merchandise, and when confronted by a 46-year-old security guard, one of the men pulled out a gun and started shooting. The security guard and two bystanders were struck by the gunfire.
Eyewitnesses recounted the chaos that ensued as customers and employees sought shelter during the shooting. Some individuals hid in back rooms and even inside a walk-in freezer to protect themselves. Two people sustained minor injuries from falls while trying to escape the danger.
The gunman and his accomplice managed to flee the scene before the arrival of law enforcement. Responding officers provided immediate assistance to the injured security guard, who had sustained gunshot wounds to his leg, arm, and hand. They applied tourniquets to control the bleeding before the guard was transported to a nearby hospital in serious condition.
Among the wounded was a 39-year-old woman who was shot in the foot and was reported to be in good condition after being taken to a hospital. Additionally, a 67-year-old woman who suffered a graze wound declined medical treatment.
Police launched a search for the suspect, described as a 19-year-old Black male with a mustache and beard. The suspect was last seen wearing a gray Mooseknuckle puffy jacket, ripped jeans, and black and silver gym shoes. As of Tuesday afternoon, no arrests had been made in connection with the incident.
