Man Sentenced to 48 Years for Rape and Robbery in Lincoln Park

A 33-year-old man has been handed a 48-year prison sentence for the heinous crimes of raping and robbing a woman in Lincoln Park in June 2023. The culprit, Reggie Brown, was identified thanks to tips from the public after Chicago police released surveillance images of him to the media.

Cook County Judge Carol Howard found Brown guilty on multiple charges, including three counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, one count of robbery, and one count of aggravated battery by strangulation. Following a bench trial earlier this year and ruling on post-trial motions, Howard recently delivered the sentence: three consecutive 15-year terms for the sexual assaults, a consecutive three-year term for the robbery, and a concurrent three-year term for the battery, totaling 48 years behind bars.

The harrowing incident occurred in the early hours after a 28-year-old woman, who was visiting a friend in the 1900 block of North Sheffield Avenue, returned from a night out with friends. Upon arriving and unlocking the building’s door, the victim was ambushed by Brown, who wrapped his arms around her neck, causing her to feel faint. He proceeded to sexually assault her, rummaged through her purse, and stole cash. Despite her pleas, Brown callously discarded her ID and credit cards before fleeing the scene.

After the traumatized victim confided in her friend, the authorities were promptly notified. Detectives obtained security footage from the area and released clear images of the suspect in July 2023. Subsequent tips, including from Brown’s ex-girlfriend and an Illinois Department of Children and Family Services employee, led to his identification. Chicago police conducted surveillance on Brown’s residence and arrested him shortly after.

According to court records, Brown has filed an appeal last week. Nevertheless, he is required to serve at least 85% of his 48-year sentence, making him eligible for release in April 2063 with good behavior.
