The term âflesh-eatingâ is inherently alarming, whether followed by âbacteriaâ or something else. Thus, paying attention to news concerning flesh-eating bacteria like Vibrio vulnificus is crucial.
The Louisiana Department of Health recently announced an outbreak of Vibrio vulnificus infections in 2026. Midway through this year, there have been nine cases in Louisiana, resulting in nine hospitalizations and five fatalities. This is a marked increase from the decadeâs average of seven cases and one death annually. An unexpected rise in infectious disease cases, such as this, qualifies as an outbreak.
Vibrio Vulnificus Is One Type Of Flesh-Eating Bacteria
Vibrio vulnificus earns its âflesh-eatingâ bacteria moniker as one of the bacteria species capable of causing necrotizing fasciitis, alongside Group A Streptococcus. To grasp the seriousness of this life-threatening condition, consider the words ânecrotizingâ and âfasciitis.â The former denotes the death of living tissue, and the latter refers to inflammation of fascia, a thin layer of connective tissue beneath the skin.
Vibrio Vulnificus Can Cause Necrotizing Fasciitis
Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe bacterial infection that destroys fascia and the flesh above it, hence the âflesh-eatingâ label. This occurs when bacteria enter the body through a break in the skin, even a minor one like a scrape or insect bite. Once inside, the bacteria can quickly reach the fascial layer.
The bacteria then spread rapidly, releasing toxins that obstruct blood flow to the area. Without oxygen-carrying blood, the tissue dies. These toxins can also affect other body parts, including major organs.
This blood flow disruption is akin to cutting off major highways to a destination, preventing oxygen, immune cells, and antibiotics from reaching the area. Emergency surgery to remove dead tissue is often the only solution to stop the infection. If not contained, the infection can lead to sepsis, shock, multiple organ failure, and death.
Vibrio vulnificus Lives In Warm Coastal Waters
Although necrotizing fasciitis is rare, the risk rises with increased presence of flesh-eating bacteria like Vibrio vulnificus.
Vibrio vulnificus resides in warm coastal brackish or saltwater, mainly from May to October. It is also found in shellfish from these waters. Entering such waters with skin breaks or consuming raw or undercooked shellfish, especially oysters, can pose infection risks.
Symptoms begin within 24 hours of infection and resemble flu symptoms: fever, chills, body aches, nausea, diarrhea, or localized pain. Within hours to days, more specific symptoms may appear, including discolored skin, swelling, worsening pain, fever, and fluid-filled blisters. Blood pressure may drop, causing dizziness. Immediate medical attention is crucial.
Climate Change May Be Leading To More And More Vibrio Vulnificus Cases
Lousiana isnât the only state affected. Florida has reported two deaths, and Marylandâs Department of Health has confirmed 29 cases, with 114 probable ones. A FOX45 article by Rebecca Pryor quotes Eric Wargotz, MD, of the Maryland State Medical Society: âCases have gone up steadily over the past decade. As the water is warm, these potential pathogens grow and become in higher concentration and can cause more illness and possibly death.â
Ongoing climate change may result in more cases of these âfleshâ mobs. A 2024 study in PLOS Pathogens calls Vibrio vulnificus a âquintessential climate-sensitive organism,â noting how climate change makes ocean waters warmer, expanding the bacteriaâs habitat and potential for infections.
Monitoring flesh-eating bacteria like Vibrio vulnificus is essential not only for health but also as an indicator of climate changes.
