Netflix has dramatically elevated its offerings in the original movie arena over the past few years.
Last year, viewers enjoyed the delightful rom-com Hit Man featuring Glen Powell and the gripping action thriller Rebel Ridge. Yet, these films may soon be overshadowed by Netflix’s promising slate for the remainder of 2025.
As part of the Watch With Us team, I’ve curated a list of my top 5 Netflix movies that have piqued my interest for this fall.
My selections range from an extravagant reinterpretation of a classic tale to a chilling political thriller and a much-anticipated sequel in one of cinema’s beloved franchises.
5. ‘Nouvelle Vague’ (November 14)
Fans of French cinema will be thrilled as the distinctly American director Richard Linklater narrates the tale behind the making of the iconic French film Breathless in his new project, Nouvelle Vague. Newcomer Guillaume Marbeck steps into the shoes of Jean-Luc Godard, an ambitious film critic turned filmmaker facing the daunting task of breaking into the male-dominated film industry of the 1950s.
In a bid to shake up the conservative 1950s French film scene, Godard aims to challenge societal norms and create a groundbreaking film. However, he faces a myriad of obstacles, including anxious investors, a volatile production team, and the elusive American actress Jean Seberg (Zoey Deutch).
Filmed in a stunning, period-appropriate black and white, Nouvelle Vague revels in its French roots while embodying Linklater’s signature playfulness, humor, and visual allure. Knowledge of Godard and Breathless only enhances the viewing experience, offering an enjoyable education on one of cinema’s landmark films.
4. ‘The Woman in Cabin 10’ (October 10)
Each year seems to bring a new adaptation of a bestselling mystery novel that everyone is buzzing about. This year, that title is The Woman in Cabin 10, based on Ruth Ware’s popular book and now a highly anticipated Netflix original. Keira Knightley stars as Laura Blacklock, a journalist on a luxury cruise for her next assignment. One fateful night, she witnesses a fellow passenger tossed overboard, and she believes she’s stumbled upon a murder.
When she reports her findings to the ship’s captain and crew, they dismiss her claims as fantasy, with no passenger reported missing. The question looms: did Laura imagine the incident, or is she tangled in a web of conspiracy designed to silence her inquiries? With her journalistic instincts kicking into high gear, she must navigate a labyrinth of truths that may be darker than she anticipates.
Fans of thrillers like Jodie Foster’s Flightplan and Emily Blunt’s The Girl on the Train will find much to enjoy in The Woman in Cabin 10, promising more twists than one might find in a pretzel factory. With Knightley enjoying her victorious streak thanks to the riveting 2023 spy series Black Doves, she’s set to shine once again as she unravels this suspenseful dilemma.
3. ‘A House of Dynamite’ (October 24)
Picture this: a nuclear missile hurtles toward Chicago, and the U.S. government has mere minutes to react. Questions abound: Who is behind the launch? Is it an unfortunate mistake or a nefarious act? Should the government opt for diplomatic negotiations or prepare for an impending nuclear conflict—an anxiety-laden scenario that has haunted humanity since the atom bomb’s inception?
A House of Dynamite grapples with these pressing questions in a political thriller directed by Kathryn Bigelow, an Oscar-winner known for her masterful take on military themes in The Hurt Locker. Attention surrounding the film surged after a standout reception at last month’s Venice Film Festival, where critics deemed it a potential heavyweight in the Oscars race.
The film features a star-studded cast, including Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Kaitlyn Dever, Jonah Hauer-King, Anthony Ramos, and more. However, it’s Bigelow’s direction that stands as the film’s centerpiece, poised to spark swirling conversations long after its release.
2. ‘Frankenstein’ (November 7)
We all know the tale of Victor Frankenstein, the mad genius who dared to play God by creating life from lifeless matter. Yet, this latest adaptation offers a fresh lens through which to view this classic story. Directed by horror maestro Guillermo del Toro, who has long aspired to bring Mary Shelley’s haunting narrative to the screen, this version promises an experience unlike any other.
In this reimagining, Oscar Isaac portrays the driven doctor, determined to prove that humanity can indeed conjure life with some discarded body parts and an electrical jolt. However, the question remains: is the Creature (Jacob Elordi) a mere man, a terrifying monster, or a tragic blend of both? Additionally, Mia Goth takes on the role of Elizabeth, Victor’s understandably apprehensive fiancée. Expect Frankenstein to embrace its Gothic horror foundations while showcasing del Toro’s signature visual style and flair for melodrama—something that promises to keep viewers captivated.

Netflix members are in for a festive treat with the premiere of the third Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man, slated for December 12. In Rian Johnson’s latest installment, the brilliant detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is back, tasked with unraveling yet another intricate mystery. This time, the action unfolds in a quaint church in upstate New York, where the controversial priest Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin) has been murdered, putting the entire town in the line of suspicion.
Could it be the ambitious preacher Jud Duplenticy (Josh O’Connor) who stands to gain the most from Jefferson’s demise, or the devoted parishioner Matha Delacroix (Glenn Close), with secrets she would prefer to remain undisclosed? The list of potential culprits also includes Jeremy Renner, Mila Kunis, Kerry Washington, Cailee Spaeny, Andrew Scott, among others.
The previous two installments of Knives Out were fan favorites, and this third outing aims to keep the cozy mystery magic alive. Debuting at the Toronto International Film Festival this September, early reviews hailed it as possibly the best Knives Out film to date, leaving audiences hopeful that the third installment will indeed be the charm for Blanc and his merry band of mystery solvers.
