In summary:
- Tech Advisor highlights Google’s March Pixel Drop, showcasing six underappreciated updates such as AI-generated icons, SpongeBob theme packs, and a new Comfort View display feature that eases eye strain.
- The update turns Now Playing into a standalone app and introduces commute alerts to At a Glance, although European users are currently missing travel alerts.
- Circle to Search now features a Try On option for clothing shopping, enabling users to visualize items on models or themselves through brand collaborations.
Over the past nine months, Google has gradually enhanced the Android operating system. Android 16 was launched last summer, followed by updates in September and November, which introduced features like AI text summaries and enhancements to Google Maps.Â
In March, a new Pixel Drop was released, packed with so many features that it might have been overwhelming for Pixel phone owners. However, I’ve meticulously examined the free upgrade to highlight the features you may not yet be utilizing fully.
The update includes Comfort View, which is gentle on the eyes, along with new themes and icons, and an innovative “try on” feature for shopping that could be truly impressive.
Comfort View

This feature may not have received much attention compared to recent AI enhancements in previous updates, but the first Pixel Drop of 2026 introduces Comfort View, a display option that effectively reduces eye strain and smooths the screen appearance immediately.
To activate it, search for Comfort View in Settings and enable the feature. Personally, I found that the screen appeared less harsh and, over time, caused less eye strain. Additionally, a Dynamic setting is available to adjust colors and brightness according to your environment.
At a Glance Improvements

New At a Glance features for commuters

This update will be appreciated by commuters. On the Home screen, a small “At a Glance” section under the clock now includes commute warnings with the March upgrade. If you rely on public transport and there’s a delay, you’ll be notified without needing to set a waypoint.
While vacationing in Austria, I found that this feature didn’t work, later discovering it’s unavailable in Europe or the UK, which is unfortunate given the popularity of train commuting there.
Now Playing Standalone App

Now Playing is an app not a widget now

Previously a well-liked widget buried in settings, Now Playing has been transformed into a standalone app. It functions like Shazam, identifying artists and songs in real-time, such as those playing in a movie theater. The app can be easily located by searching for “Now Playing,” and it provides a history of recognized songs for future reference.
Add the New SpongeBob SquarePants Theme

The new SpongeBob theme

While I may not be a fan of the animated show, the introduction of the SpongeBob theme pack illustrates Google’s effort to diversify its audience. It creates the impression of having a new phone. To apply this theme, long-press the home screen, choose Wallpaper & Style, then select the Theme pack and look for the SpongeBob SquarePants theme.
You may need to download it, indicated by a button in the upper right corner. If, like me, you use a launcher such as Nova to emulate the iPhone experience, you may need to switch to the default Pixel Launcher first.
In Settings, search for “launcher” and select Pixel Launcher under Default home app.
Change the Icons

AI can generate icons for you
John Brandon / Foundry
I’ve explored various apps for customizing Android themes and icons, with Nova Launcher being a personal favorite for mimicking iPhone icons. The March Pixel Drop introduces new, artistically appealing icons, which can be generated using AI. Available styles include Scribbles, Cookies, Easel, Treasure, and Stardust.
To utilize these, ensure you’re using the default Home app, Pixel Launcher. Long-press the Home screen, select Wallpapers & Styles, then Icons. Choose the new Create option and select your preferred style. I experimented with the Cookies style, resulting in vibrant icons with bright reds and browns.
Circle to Search ‘Try On’ Feature

The new Try On feature is amazing
John Brandon / Foundry
This feature, introduced in early 2024, allows users to circle items on the web to learn more. The March update enhances this with a “Try On” feature for clothing. Long-press the navigation bar to activate Circle to Search, circle an outfit, and view search results.
Select “Find the Look” to view the outfit, with an option to try it on using a model or your own photo. The feature works with brands that partner with Circle to Search. I found it effective with many brands, including some Amazon shirts and pants.
