Authorities reported the mysterious discovery of six bodies inside a train boxcar in Laredo, Texas, on Sunday.

A Union Pacific employee found the deceased individuals in a train yard located near the Mexican border, as stated by Laredo Police Investigator Joe Baeza.

Police and firefighters confirmed the deaths of the six individuals, but the cause of their deaths remains undetermined, according to police reports.

Union Pacific expressed sorrow over the incident, with spokesman Daryl Bjoraas stating that the company is collaborating closely with law enforcement on the investigation.

No survivors were found, and the origin of the deceased individuals is still unknown.

“Imagine a loading dock at a seaport, but for trains,” Baeza explained to NBC News. “This is where they load and unload a lot of rail cars.”

Previous incidents near the US-Mexico border involving train cars have often been linked to migrant and human smuggling operations, such as the 53 migrants found in a sweltering tractor-trailer in Texas in 2022.

In 2023, a locked train car 20 miles east of Uvalde housed 12 migrants, two of whom were deceased, after enduring intense heat.

The temperature in Laredo reached a peak of 97 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
