South Side Man Sentenced to Six Years for Robbing Two People in River North
A South Side man who allegedly robbed and placed a knife to the throats of two people in River North last January has been sentenced to six years in prison.
On January 13, 2024, at around 4:45 p.m., a 27-year-old man reported to the police that an assailant had approached him from behind and held a knife to his throat in the 300 block of North LaSalle Street. The robber demanded his belongings, including a phone, wallet, backpack with a laptop, and a Canada Goose jacket.
Police were able to track the victim’s phone and recover the stolen items behind a Chicago Fire Department station at Dearborn and Hubbard streets. However, the robber was not present at the scene.
Shortly after this incident, a 32-year-old man contacted 911, informing them that he had also been a victim of a similar robbery where a knife was held to his throat near State and Grand streets, not far from the fire station.
Law enforcement officers decided to stake out the area where the first victim’s belongings were found, suspecting that the robber might return. Their efforts paid off when Jerry Mufid, also known as Jerry Mufarreh, was apprehended behind the fire station soon after.
Mufid, aged 21, pleaded guilty to two counts of armed robbery in front of Judge Michael Hood and was handed concurrent six-year sentences for his crimes.
In addition to these charges, Mufid had previously pleaded guilty to an identity theft case where he was accused of using another individual’s credit card at an outlet mall in Rosemont. For this offense, he received a one-year sentence.
