Fumito Ganryu Unveils Adventure-Ready Collection for Summer

Fumito Ganryu was beaming with excitement as he strolled through his latest collection in the comfort of an air-conditioned showroom on a scorching summer day in Tokyo. The 49-year-old designer, formerly of Comme des Garçons, hails from Fukuoka and had a vision of creating a wardrobe fit for epic outdoor escapades this season. Inspired by his childhood memories of summer adventures, Ganryu curated a lineup that would make even Indiana Jones envious. As he navigated through the sunlit showroom, he shared his thoughts on the collection: “I always associate summer with adventure. It brings back memories of my youth, and as the weather warms up, I feel a pull to explore the great outdoors.” (Ganryu recommends Nasu, in Tochigi, as a picturesque destination for hiking).

The standout pieces in the collection included belted field jackets, utility-laden button-ups, and mesh-paneled military-inspired jackets, complemented by graphic tees, double-zip hoodies, and quick-drying shorts. A standout innovation was the terry cloth cape, dubbed a “changing poncho,” designed to simplify and dignify outdoor wardrobe changes (no more awkward towel maneuvers at the beach). This versatile piece is sure to appeal to surfers, campers, and festival attendees alike. Additionally, a toweled trench coat offered the comfort of a bathrobe with the sophistication of formal wear, featuring peak lapels and a side tie for a polished look.

A special collaboration with Full Count, one of the esteemed Osaka 5 denim brands, added a rugged touch to the collection with selvedge jeans and jackets. Ganryu infused a playful asymmetry into the denim patterns, tilting them intentionally, and gathered the back seam of jackets for a whimsical twist on traditional designs.

While outdoor-inspired fashion has saturated the menswear market in recent years, Ganryu managed to inject a sense of novelty, joy, and practicality into his collection. Unfamiliar with the internet slang term “touch grass,” the essence of the assortment resonated with a desire to embrace nature and embark on thrilling adventures.
