Chicago Man Charged with Shooting Two Women While on GPS Ankle Monitor
A Chicago man already on a GPS ankle monitor for a pending felony case has been charged with shooting two women in North Lawndale. Nicholas Young, 31, faces two counts of attempted first-degree murder in connection with the June 3 shooting in the 4100 block of West 19th Street.
According to prosecutors, the 36- and 49-year-old victims were standing outside their home around 11 p.m. when they heard a man yelling. Moments later, several gunshots were fired, and they dove for cover. Both women realized they had been shot, with one sustaining a wound to the left thigh and the other to the right ankle.
A witness who was nearby identified Young’s voice as the person who yelled before the shooting. Additionally, video images of the alleged shooter were obtained, and both victims identified Young as the perpetrator.
Investigators revealed that data from Young’s GPS-equipped ankle monitor showed him walking from his home to the shooting scene and back. Young was wearing the electronic monitoring band due to a pending aggravated battery case in Will County.
During a hearing, Judge Ankur Srivastava granted the state’s detention petition, emphasizing the violent nature of the crime and Young’s extensive criminal history, which includes eight prior felony convictions. The judge deemed electronic monitoring ineffective in ensuring Young’s compliance with court orders in Will County.
