The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced federal charges against a man accused of brutally stabbing a Ukrainian refugee on a light rail train in Charlotte, North Carolina. Recent footage released by local authorities captures the tragic moments leading up to the death of Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old refugee, who was seated directly in front of her attacker, DaCarlos Brown Jr. The video shows Brown, whose criminal history is concerningly extensive, suddenly brandishing a knife in a shocking act of violence. On Tuesday, the DOJ filed a federal complaint against Brown in U.S. District Court in Charlotte. He faces one count of committing a lethal act on a mass transit system, highlighting the federal system’s response to such heinous crimes.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi commented on the situation, stating, “We will seek the maximum penalty for this unforgivable act of violence—he will never again see the light of day as a free man.” Such unequivocal remarks signal a strong commitment to justice in cases where victims are marginalized refugees.

The FBI’s Director Kash Patel characterized the murder of Zarutska as “a disgraceful act” that should never take place on American soil.
