Jimmy Rollins has voiced his perspective on the recent David Fry incident, urging MLB not to overhaul helmet regulations in response to the unfortunate event. He expressed to TMZ Sports that while the situation was deeply concerning, a mandate for facemasks is unwarranted.

For those unaware, Fry tragically took a direct hit from a 99.6 MPH fastball during a game between the Guardians and Tigers. This harrowing incident led to Fry’s immediate hospitalization, igniting debates among fans about whether it’s time to reconsider batters’ protective headgear.

At LAX the following day, Rollins reiterated his stance, suggesting that Rob Manfred should maintain the current regulations.

“That’s a personal choice,” the 2008 World Series champion explained. “For hitters, a face guard can be distracting. You want to be focused while batting, because at the end of the day, numbers matter. You need to be in the zone to hit effectively.”

However, Rollins, who was known for wearing the conventional ear flap-style helmet during his career, expressed genuine concern for Fry’s well-being, recalling his own experience of being struck in the head by a Cliff Lee fastball.

“I can only imagine how he feels today,” Rollins sympathized.

Fry is projected to miss a minimum of a month and a half while recovering from fractures to his face and nose; however, his manager Stephen Vogt has reassured everyone that he will ultimately be alright.
